Doula is greek and by definition means “woman who serves”. In birth, that means a woman who provides continuous emotional support as well as offer comfort strategies to help the partner support the mother. Historically women have been serving in the birth world since the beginning of time. When birth shifted to the hospital, birth became a medical event and therefore the “doula” was seen as unnecessary. Today doulas are recognized all over the world as a vital part of a birthing family. Doctors, nurses, midwives and hospitals are even enjoying the benefits of laboring famiies having extra support. Women with a doula at their birth are less fearful and more educated. Many studies have proven the reduction in cesarean sections, inductions and need for pain medicine to name a few.
If I am honored to be a part of your birth, then here are some things you can expect:
* Doula does not MAKE decisions for families, she guides them in decision making.
