In other countries breastfeeding is seen as the norm. In the USA we still don’t consider breastfeeding an acceptable way to feed a baby. Even though many people will tell you it is better, they will also tell you it’s disgusting (especially in public). When we can see a baby be comforted by his or her mom anywhere and often, only then will breastfeeding get easier for our society. The more we are surrounded by breastfeeders the more accustomed to this way of life a new mom and dad will be. Statistically speaking that makes for healthier mothers and babies and much less of the problems associated with breastfeeding.
Having a good support system in those first few weeks postpartum is integral to a strong start. Calling for help immediately when in doubt, will make for less problems and a happy family.While some moms and babies will have no problems with breastfeeding, others will. Unfortunately when problems do arise time is of critical importance.
Some of the services provided by a lactation specialist/consultant:
- Prenatal counseling regarding risk factors that may affect breastfeeding
- Proper latch
- Preventing and managing common concerns such as poor latch, inadequate milk supply, nipple or breast pain and calming a fussy baby
- Milk expression and storage
- Strategies for working and breastfeeding
- Breastfeeding in challenging situations; multiples, premature baby, sick baby or a special medical situation
